It might be a duty station for us, and I'm trying to decide what would be right. ~Is it country? ~Does it snow? ~Is it a big city, or little? ~Anyone here from California? What is your opinion? ~How is the diversity? Are there a lot of other cultures? ~Do I have to drive more than 10 minutes to get to a Walmart or a Target? Just what are your general opinions? Thanks!

yes no little not from cali not really you have to drive 30 minutes to get to a Target.

Its 28 miles to Target and about a hour to the malls in Savannah :(

I liked Beaufort at first, but after a year..I hate it! I can't wait to move, lol

We really like it here. There's not as much stuff as I'm use to, ie. Target and a mall, but the town just has a different feel to it. I liked it more after 3 1/2 weeks than I ever liked Lejeune/Jacksonville, NC in 3 years... lol. We've been here 3 months now.

~Is it country? Yes ~Does it snow? No ~Is it a big city, or little? Little ~Anyone here from California? What is your opinion? We just moved here from Camp Pendleton (Oceanside, CA). I absolutely hate it here and am counting down the days until we leave. I'm just not fond of the whole small town thing. ~How is the diversity? Are there a lot of other cultures? Not really. ~Do I have to drive more than 10 minutes to get to a Walmart or a Target? Walmart is within 10 min. Target is about 30 min and there is no Starbucks here (it is right across the street from Target). I think that if you like the small town atmosphere, you would like it. I, however, do not but I have grown up in the suburbs and that is more my style.

I have been here a few years now. Here's what I can tell you. I wouldn't call it "country". It's a smallish town, but it's not a bunch of open land with houses few and far between. That is what I would consider country. It can flurry maybe 2 times per winter, but not ever enough to stay on the ground. So no snow, but it can get down in the low 30's upper 20's. It's a smallish city. There isn't a lot of stuff to do here, but a 30-60 minute drive will offer more options (see below for more info). Not from Cali, but from Fl. I miss Florida, and am finally moving back home. I for one am not military, and I'm a SAHM to a 3 y/o daughter. Because of all of that, and the lack of stuff to do here, I have found it very hard to make friends here. There are other cultures, mainly the Gullah people. But they are mostly on Saint Helena Island, which I doubt you would pass by ever unless you are heading to the beach. But they do have Gullah festivals and such, where you can delve into their history. They are actually quite fun. We pretty much have Walmart,Kmart, TJ MAxx,JCP,Best Buy lowes, Home depot and Belk. Any other major stores you will have to drive a ways. Bluffton is 30 minutes away. (still Beaufort county). They have Target, outlet mall, better restaurant variety, better theater, etc. Hilton Head has a mall (if you can call it that). It has like 8 stores, which are all pretty crappy. Savannah and Charleston are both 1-1 1/2 hours away. They have big malls and more to do. Honestly, I think Beaufort is beautiful. Downtown is rich in history, with very interesting stories. It's a nice place to hang out in the waterfront park, or eat with a water view. It's my fave part about this city. We have awesome festivals throughout the year, with diverse food and fun for the whole family. They have free concerts and movies in the waterfront park. I'm sorry this was so long, but I feel you should be informed with facts. That is what I have tried to provide. I personally can't wait to move, and would never move back. But that is mainly because I have a child and there just isn't a lot to do with her here. I grew up in a small town, and couldn't wait to get out. Maybe that has to do with it too. I wish you the best of luck in your decision. Hope I have helped some.

I wouldnt say its country, but it is a small city, been here almost 2 years, gets really cold, but no snow, you would have to go to north carolina for that. We were in 29 palms, CA before this, and over there was bad, but over here its not much better, i say that because ive had bad experiences with people of other cultures, around here i would say that the local co,munity is mostly arican american and caucasian, almost no hispanics. Walmart is less than 10 minutes but target is about 45 minutes away. Hope this helps :)
